“Tight tolerance” is one of the most overused phrases in machining. It means very little without context.
A strong precision machining partner can clearly define what tolerances they hold consistently, how they measure them, and how they control variation across runs. This includes understanding geometric dimensioning, surface finish requirements, and how material behavior affects results.
When choosing a machine shop, ask for proof, not promises.
Questions to ask
- What tolerance ranges do you routinely achieve?
- Can you provide sample inspection reports or CMM data?
- How do you validate repeatability over multiple parts?
The ability to hit a tight tolerance once is not the same as maintaining it over hundreds of parts. Consistency is where real capability shows.
Beyond tolerances, material behavior and industry demands play a major role in part performance and reliability.
